While we do our best to put cash directly into survivors hands, in tandem, we thought it would be awesome to create a body doubling/coworking space where we can support each other in sifting through all the shit that goes into getting financial stable. And offer relevant financial resources as we find them!
That’s why we host our “Get Shit Done” evenings. They will occur the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month and be available in person or online (must register or email advocate@lgbtqcenterofdurham.org for the virtual link).
If you or someone you know is a money expert who wants to share their knowledge with queer/trans survivors, please reach out!

Join us for a community showing of this film. You are welcome to bring your own refreshments. This virtual experience is hosted by PEN America, benefiting Allies in Arts, a non-profit organization supporting women, BIPOC, and queer artists in all mediums through education, grants, exhibitions and mutual aid which is leading a national tour of the film as a suicide prevention resource for LGBTQ+ teens.
From PEN America:
On Saturday, October 10th at 3pm (ET), we are hosting an online screening of SECOND NATURE. This critically-acclaimed film narrated by Elliot Page follows trailblazing evolutionary biologist Dr. Joan Roughgarden as she meets scientists exploring the 1500+ animal species who engage in same-sex sexual behavior and parenting, change sex, form matriarchies, and more, debunking myths that females are “inferior” and that being queer is “unnatural.” (Check out a trailer for the film here).
The screening will be followed by a Q & A conversation with Elliot Page, director Drew Denny, Dr. Roughgarden, and authors Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson (And Tango Makes Three), moderated by Jonathan Friedman, PEN America’s Sy Syms managing director for U.S. Free Expression programs. In addition to the film, they’ll discuss censorship, from bans on picture books (including And Tango Makes Three, a fact-based story about two male penguins raising a chick together) to non-fiction books, including in the sciences.
While we offer this to the public for free, please consider providing financial support to Transforming Families NC a program of the LGBTQ Center of Durham providing support to caregivers of trans and gender non-conforming youth of all ages and to Allies in Arts.

Durham County’s “I Take Testing Seriously” Program (ITTS) works with community partners and members alike to decrease rates of HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis C, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia. Our public health educators provide comprehensive sexual health services anywhere in Durham County.
When folx attend testing services through the LGBTQ Center of Durham, they are able to receive: free and confidential HIV/STI screenings, PrEP referrals as needed, and confidential counseling on next steps.
Specimens are sent to the NC State Lab for testing where a 4th generation test is used.
Access to free barriers (internal, external) and lubrication is always readily available.
Our tester can also answer questions about PrEP and provide initial steps in the County's Quick Start program for PrEP. Stop in today!
